I can't remember where I first learned about this knight fork tactic—maybe it was from a Chess.com lesson or a GothamChess video, but I'm not sure. On move 4, when Black played Qb4+, I blocked it (which the computer suggests was a small mistake), ended up losing my bishop, but then managed to fork Black's rook by move 8. After that small mistake, the computer considered all my moves as 'great,' 'best,' and 'best' and I'm still +0.8 according to stockfish. So in other words, it wasn't terrible.
When I first saw this tactic online, I thought, "Wow, that's an awesome response! You get the rook!" However, when I tried it in an actual game, I worried, "Uh oh, now my knight is trapped."
So, what should you do with your knight after executing such a tactic? Should you try to free it, or is it okay to let it be trapped in exchange for gaining tempo? What’s the best strategy?
