Actually you would be best to study several players. Why limit yourself?

I don't know where the dividing line would be -- Spassky? -- but I agree with the point to study earlier players. 21st century games are harder to follow.

I'd also say study a player who inspires you and will thus keep you motivated to learn and to play.

It is unproductive to just pick one chess player to study.

Pick several and learn from each one.  This will make you a stronger chess player.
