There are three main options:

  • The opponent no longer wished to continue the game
  • The opponent wished to leave the game for external purposes (I. E. going to work)
  • The opponent wished to leave the game for internal purposes (I. E. mouse not working properly or lag)

4 pawns down, less activity, less king safety, white is more or less lost. Engine says -7.

No one can "explain" why your opponent resigned. We can only offer opinions. White has a terrible position! He is 4(!) pawns down. his Queen is under attack and has few attractive squares, and Black has a tremendous initiative. Stockfish evaluates the position at (-6.10). Even though there is currently no forced mate. White has plenty of good reasons to want to quit.

Down in material. No pawn structure. Exposed King. Probably thought "why bother?"

I think your opponent may have thought they were in a what I call “queen checkmate” (self-explanatory) but I have just analyzed it and they actually have two safe squares for the queen.

I’ve quit in a winning position because I was in a chipotle line and once I got my food, I decided that eating was more important. Win or lose, I don’t care, chess is more of a way time pass time when I’m bored.
