Why Every Piece has a "Personality"
Three Simple Golden Rules If you follow these, you will beat most casual players: Control the Center: Imagine the four squares in the very middle are "the hill." Whoever stands on the hill sees everything. King Safety: Your King is like a President. He shouldn't be out in the streets during a fight. Keep him behind a wall of pawns. Don't Move the Same Piece Twice: In the beginning, try to get a new piece out with every turn. If you move your Knight three times while your opponent brings out three different pieces, they have a bigger army ready to fight.
A Fun Fact: The "L" Shape Have you ever wondered why the Knight moves in an "L"? It’s actually the most unique move in any board game. Mathematically, it allows the Knight to always change the color of the square it stands on. If it starts on a white square, it must land on a black square. This makes it the perfect "forking" tool—it can attack two pieces at once that are sitting on the same color!
The "Endgame" Secret When most of the pieces are traded and the board is empty, the King changes roles. He stops hiding and becomes a powerful attacker. A King in the endgame is worth about "4 points"—making him stronger than a Knight or a Bishop! Do you prefer the idea of attacking your opponent's King right away, or do you like to play defensively and wait for them to make a mistake?
