Why is this a good move?

Why is a Bishop trade for a knight at this stage considered the best move? The knight on a3 isn't valuable as it is on the edge. The bishop on the other hand, is extremely valuable waiting to be put in the right place.

The only advantage for black that I see is that white has doubled pawns.

what position?

oh nvm its because of doubled pawns

And also because the bishop is currently undeveloped. If it was on d6, I'd likely play something else, but here you can use your move to trade an undeveloped piece for a developed piece and give white doubled apawns.

There are a lot of similar positions and it isn't necessarily good to take the knight. Even though the fact that the bishop is currently undeveloped is an argument for exchanging it, I don't think I'd do it because black has more space and his pieces won't get cramped. White gets the two bishops, white's f1 bishop is obviously a good bishop and exchanging just allows white a route for the c1 bishop because a3-a4 can't be prevented. So no.

Circling back to this, Stockfish on depth 10 -- as the diagram shows -- is not worth anything at all.  Still bxn does deserve consideration, even if it may not be better than the logical alternatives.

The computer feels that this is the best move because computers are stupid.

Engines are good at tactics. They are great for blunder-checking.

But nobody takes their opening suggestions seriously.

Thanks yea I see the doubles pawns but have to wonder if it’s worth loosing a perfectly good Bishop for a Knight

Doubled Pawns are not the end of the world... especially when there are compensating factors, such as the Bishop pair or a useful open file.

It's considered a good move because depth 10 is not a good source of actual good moves (well idk)

At depth 27 on my 3-year ol laptop Stockfish 11's top choices are Be6 and Bd6, which have the same evaluation (-1.16).  I can see the positional logic behind Bxa3, but it seems like a very committal choice so early in the game. I've had those two bishops jump up and bite me too many times!

It doesn’t have to be a good move,

the computer moves by statistics, so it could be the best worst move, lol

Thank you very much, guys happy.png Perhaps its wise to actually read the openings instead of playing some common openings of my opponent against a computer to have a good strategy haha
