Why is this move good?

Hi,

Newbie here. I'm analyzing my last game. I did 8. Be4, but the engine is saying that the best move would have been Bg4. I didn't do that since I assumed white would do f3, then I'd have to move the bishop to h5, and white could do g4 and I'm trapped. I didn't bother with all that and just went Bg4 so I don't lose my bishop.

However, the engine is saying I should have gone Bg4.

Then 9. f3   Nd7

10. g3   Bh3

Why would I assume that white would NOT take my bishop? If white does f3, why am I moving an unrelated knight and leaving my bishop to be captured. And then white doesn't capture? Why is it best for white to NOT capture my piece? And if that is in fact the best engine move to NOT capture, why would I assume that a 700-800 rated player would know that?

Any insight would be sooo appreciated!!! I've seen similar things while analyzing all my games, where the engine is telling me the best moves are to put a minor piece in danger with no protection and the opponent won't capture.

Thanks!

More specifically, note that White's knight is hanging at h4, and that ...Nd7 opens up a diagonal so that that knight comes under attack by Black's queen. At that point White can exchange minor pieces if he wants, but after fxg4 ...Qxh4+, White is in check, White has a doubled g-pawn, and White must further weaken White's kingside.

Thank you so, so much!!!! I was just not seeing the queen threatening the capture and check. I understand it now. I was so focused on the bishop. That was so helpful. Thank you!!!! I really appreciate you taking the time to explain it to me.
