C23: Bishop's Opening: Horwitz Gambit

Just finished up an interesting game from the Black side in a Bishop's Opening. I was feeling in the mood for something along the ideas of the Evan's Gambit and was impressed with the development advantage I was able to gain. White was about 300 points lower and did make mistakes to help me along though.

I don't know if there's much established theory on this chessmaster. The obvious differences are that as Black you lack the first move advantage and that the knight can take the offered pawn as well. As I mentioned, white made a few mistakes - in a game were fast deployment is an objective, every tempo counts. According to the site engine, white would have retained a minor advantage if he had followed the 5.Nf3 line. However, with these older tactical lines, creativity and mistakes count for a lot!

I was able to find a couple of other sample game from the site database.

What's wrong about the natural 4.Bb3?

It looks equally good, or better than 4.Bxb5 (which should also be fine for white- the Evans gambit is interesting, but not when being a whole tempo down).

You're right Master pfren that 4.Bb3 would probably have been a better continuation for white. As for how Black could follow up, Nc6 or b4 and continuing to develop would probably be the best way to handle it? The advanced b-pawn could offer a line for the bishop, rook, or possible queenside expansion. White would probably retain a minor advantage with good play. I do agree that the defense I used is questionable (when playing an opponent with a lower rating, I'm more likely to do something like that).

That was a nice game that you played with the Horwitz Gambit. I will check my
databases for this gambit line.
