Comparing chess to a "board game" is like comparing the hope diamond to a pile of rocks. maybe i am prejudiced, but the second comment is correct-way to go chess.com. i never knew i had so much to say till i started posting on these forums.

chess remains a board game to most people because they don't know better. mcdonalds is also considered to be food by some people.

Has the world gone mad? Of course chess is a board game... it's a game played on a board! What else is required to quailify for the definition? There are many fine board games, and its inclusion in this class is nothing to be sniffy about.

chess is fun and i like how erik created this site!
This is a great site, I agree with you Jack. Nonetheless, chess is as much a board game as shogi, go or chinese chess. I'm not knocking the site.. merely replying to erik's contention that chess is somehow elevated beyond board game status.

I guess since chess is played on a board, it can be classified as a board game. However, it has to be considered the Roll Royce of board games. It is the greatest game of all.
Have you tried Shogi (Japanese Chess) Hugh? A game that in my opinion is every bit as good as western chess. One needs two observations before comparisons can be made, or have any merit.
