Defending against a fierce attack

This was a great game. My opponent waged a fierce attack with threat after threat after threat. I was lucky that I had pieces in the right place at the right time to be able (barely) to defend. He had a big space advantage and I did not like my very cramped position. (I wonder where I went wrong in the opening.) It was a very slow moving game until he pounced. Then it was attack, attack, attack. It was very satisfying to defend successfully but I was lucky. I want to find a better opening so I won't be so cramped again. I'm looking at Gruenfeld instead of King's Indian as my future standard opening but maybe King's Indian just wasn't the right defense after his early e4 and f4.

i gotta be honest i liked it, nice example of how to get out of cramped positions and to defend like you said threat after threat

Nice game! Very entertaining!

I like playing that opening for black myself, and I had to learn the hard way how to avoid those cramped positions. One way or another, you have to be prepared to be cramped a bit, but you made things a little more difficult for yourself in my opinion with that early fianchetto.

Instead, you should try on your fourth move 4. ... Bg4 followed by 5. ... d5! , a standard motif that I incorporate in these situations. The pawn tension leads to a more open game, and then you have the option of trading off your bishop and try to close things back up, or getting rid of a knight whilst further ripping open the position on the queenside.

Give it a shot, I'm sure you'll find it an easier game.

But, given the path you chose, well done!
