Dragon @-/\_/\-!

Introduction

The following game is blitz 5min +2sec. The opening is accelerated dragon reached by an early ...g6. Black uses Dzindzi`s ...f6 idea leaving a hole on e6 but that cannot be easily occupied by the White Knight. Black also gets the exchange of queens to go into the Sicilian endgame, usually good for Black. Endgame occurs with R+N+3p -versus- R+B+3p.

Opening Discussion

You can find this line in NCO or on your computer database, so i will jump to move nine.

On move nine White plays 9.a3, cannot be the best option as Black always has the opportunity to play ...a4 making it difficult for Whites queenside and also Black can give up this a pawn for Whites central e pawn. The timing of ...a4 i was unsure about so if anyone could suggest please let me know, but why rather than just providing variation(s) unannotated. Of course 9...a4 is a possibilty and probably strongest.

More usual moves for White include 9.a4 preventing ...a4 from Black (a theme used in other lines), and 9.0-0 which scores well for White.

Black plays 9...d6 'ignoring' Whites previous move to transpose into the line (9.0-0 followed by either f3 or h3) a tempo up so to speak. Black also has another option 9...Ng4 which i would normally play against 9.a4, perhaps this is what i should have done. What do you think?

After 12...Bc6 i am still in book except in this position white has played a3 insted of a4, so im guessing we transposed into an improved line for Black.

Middlegame

After 13...Nd7 (5 seconds) Black offers the exchange of his fianchettoed bishop but has simply missed Whites mistake 13.Re1. Insted 13...e5 wins the e4 pawn. Something like 13.f4 is probably Whites best?!

15.f6!? I read about this move in Dzindzi`s book on openings for Black and is a useful idea in my opinion. No doubt a weakness is created on e6 but how can white take advantage of it is the question.

16...Qb6 forcing the exchange of queens and an endgame. Sans queens good for black? What do you think? I also considered 16...Nc5.

18.Nd5 obviously looks good for White as after 18...Bxd5 19.exd5 Black has backward pawn on e7 which is not fatal but i think black would be happy with draw. As for 18...a4; possibly a little too late?! ha Nonetheless, this pawn is a torn in Whites queenside.

Black fails to activate his rooks efficiently after move 19, and is indeed one of those moments, which rook first and which rook where!? Having contemplated 19...Ra5 i moved the a rook but perhaps the f rook was the one to move. Black finds himself playing passive moves here eg. 21...Rfd8 (not pleased with these few moves).

White concludes the middlegame exchanging Knight and c pawn for Bishop and a pawn aswell as giving Black activity with his rooks, one being on the 7th rank. Not won for either side and i guess both sides have chances, yes/no?!

Endgame

The endgame position is rather close. White would be happy with the bishop since there are pawns on both sides of the board if it where to come down to N -Versus- B ending. Blacks rook on 7th rank is definatley keeping this balanced.

24...Nc5 looks a natural move but is poor move in fact. White has 25.Bb1! winning. Did you spot this straight away? Blitz game so tough one to spot (unless your an online blitz freak!)

White destroys Blacks pawns and gives Black play on the 7th rank, but after some exchanges the position is quite even.

I have shown the game up to where White is definatley winning but with time running out the moves got a little hairy and well, it ends up swinging in favour for Black. (no point in showing the moves, they are nonsenseical.)

Please comments, advice, reaction about this game please.

Why did black not play 6...Nxd4, winning the knight? Is there some trap I'm missing?

I can't see why not that or Bxd4.  either there's something there or the OP made a mistake in the game.

But he says its book theory up to move 9.  Maybe I just dont know my openings well enough.  Yell

I just checked up and it looks like he swapped Be3 and Nc3 around btw.  Let us know , Graw, thanks.

I actually searched 9.a3 and it has been played at master level. The most frequent response has been 9...a4 and 9...Ng4 but some opting for 9...d6 playing similiar line to that i actually played.

If anyones interested see:-
Van Riemsdijk - Hernandez, 1991 (1/2-1/2) 9...d6
Ostojic - Tennstedt, 1993 (1-0) 9...d6
Kogan - Gant, 1994 (1-0) Quite similar.
Motylev - Guseinov, 2000 (1-0) This is an imrovement on my game, White plays 13.f4 (as suggested because 13.Re1 losses pawn due to 13...e5 Which i missed) So this game is a marker! Black also opted for ...Nc5 rather than forcing the exchange of queens, ...Qb6.(this is the key game i think)
Gongora - Avotins, 2002 (0-1) is 9.0-0 and h3 transpose variation i was talking about in the opening discussion (the difference being white has played a4 not a3 in this game, that how i thought slight improvement since ...a4 is on and removes the defender from the c2 pawn.) ...f6 idea also used in this game.
Guseinov - Ozolins, 2002 (1-0) Guseinov as white this time.
Anand - Malakhov, 2002 (1-0) Similiar opening, black doesnt fancy ...f6 against Anand! (who would?!)
Beccerra - Donaldson, 2004 (1/2-1/2) Interesting game, similar ideas to how i played.

woops yeah, entered the opening moves in wrong order, so Be3 before Nc3, arriving at opening position after blacks 8th move.

Sorry for the confusion but im a complicated guy! Undecided

I am a huge fan of the Accelerated Dragon and love that it gets equality in virtually all lines.  It is sound positionally and has many tactics that can be overlooked.

Im with you on that one! Really interesting opening to play as Black. I prefer it to the normal dragon but i do also like some lines as black in the Najdorf.

Since your a fan of Acc.Dragon, any comments about the game!?  [Ignoring move order to position after blacks 8th. I put the moves in in a different order]

Why are you so obsessed with the accelerated dragon?

I probably would have treated 9. a3 with Ng4 with pretty much the same game as in the normal lines.  But Black would have an option of pushing a4 too.  I think Nd7 is a good move because it prepares Nc5.  But there was better as you pointed out.  Qb6 is an idea common to the Accelerated Dragon because any endgame favors Black.  Well played!

Thanks. In hindsight, ...Ng4 would be my preference. I usually play this against 9.a4 so why not against 9.a3. I suppose the game could have been more interesting if the time control was longer, that way there would have been a proper end to the game, so sorry about that. Thanks for checking the game out, and well, i hope someone learned something from the game, at least acc dragon players can take something from it.
