Yes, 5...Bd7 is sometimes played, but it does nothing to pressure d4, and gives White time to castle to safety with his king. If Black goes for immediate pressure on d4, White has no time to castle!
It is sound. Just a lot of people play a certain move and lose a pawn in the center. Also, it allows you to castle queenside if needed in case you want to open up the kingside.
