It is sound. Just a lot of people play a certain move and lose a pawn in the center. Also, it allows you to castle queenside if needed in case you want to open up the kingside.

We're getting a lot of discussion here about a couple of moves in just one variation of the French--not the main lines and not the most common variation. This seems to indicate that there are a lot of interesting ideas in this defense.
No it shouldn't be banned. What are you going to argue next stalemate should be banned too ?
There is nothing wrong here.
I prefer the ...Bb7 line because it is a waiting move and it can set up a trap
