Fun little vienna win

Played this live tonight.  Pretty satisfying.  Annotations are in game.

Very nice game,

the bishop sac (move 12) looked scary but with your kingside threat it wasn;t that big of a deal.

Nicely done :)

my instinct is that your bishop sac was not sound, and that it would have been a valuable piece in attachking the KS once placed on Bd3. This is just a feeling however, and if I have time I will do some analysis.

It's certainly a debatable sac, but in my head, black had to take a lot of time to snap off the piece, all the while, white's pieces rush to the king side like rabid dogs.

I agree; 14. ...Nxf5 looks like it gives white some problems.

Also, 21. f6 is a small improvement over Qh4. :)

Could 14...Nxf5 be an improvement on the defense? After the obvious 15.Qxd8 Rxd8 16.exf5 Nd7 is a clear pawn up and about to take the open b-file. 15.Qh5 Qf6 gives white similiar problems, plus black threatens a fork on d4.

Not sure if it's best, but it looks like an effective bailout to a strong position.

That looks pretty good, but i would think white would be better avoiding the queen exchange, although, i'm not sure what i would have tried after Nxf5. I still think black has his work cut out for him: everything on the queen side while white's pieces (minus the queen's rook) are bearing down on the king side, but maybe i'm wrong and should have lost.

Slack, at 21, isn't it all the same?  I see what you're saying, but i think either move works just as well as the last, at least at that point.

Thanks for the comments folks.  Perhaps white wasn't winning here.

I would say its drawish if black played correctly..

but at yours/our level of play, it certainley was winning for white, not all people are as strong as people who analyse the game (Ceundillar for example, 2700 rated on here)

Whatever the result of any post mortem, you played a great game (especially live) and showed us a highly imaginative sac. I'm left wondering why I have never played the Vienna. Thanks for posting.

When will you realize Vienna waits for you?

Avatar of gimly

huh?

Nice Vienna game. It also looked like a delayed king's gambit line.

Well, the idea behind 21. f6 is not only to threaten checkmate, but to create a tomb for the king, i.e., by advancing the pawn you would prevent black from creating an escape route on f7.

In your game, yes, it all worked out the same. :)

"When will you realize Vienna waits for you?" is a lyric from a Billy Joel song called "Vienna".

oh, very nice :)

"I knew the bishop sac had to be good" - I don't think so. Why not just retreat the bishop to d3 and have pretty much the same attack but with an extra (attacking) piece?

Avatar of Dakota_Clark

Oooh, nice find. Good eye. I'd probably just see the position's "only obvious choice" and just play it. Seems to be my problem; not checking the entire board, even before making the "simplest" of moves. Anyway, good job. Black really killed himself with that move, but you still deserve a pat on the back for seeing the folly.

(wooo, 500th post)

I'd like to attempt to defend without returning the piece. What about 13...Re8? 14.Qxh7+ Kf8 15.Qh8+ Ng8 is not mate. Now if 14.f5 (in order to threaten Bg5) then 14...Qb6!?, with threats to d4 and the a7-g1 diagonal. I think Black is still living, with an extra piece.

RR, I was being more categorical and authoritative :p

after 13 .... Re8  14. Qxh7+ Kf8  I don't think anyone is  is going to play 15 Qh8+ forcing Black to move the Knight and create an escape square at e7. Make Black spend a tempo moving that Knight. I reckon 15 Rg3!? (15 f5 also looks interesting), White's threats are difficult to meet.
