8.a3 looks like the losing move. Perhaps 8.Be3 then 9.Nc3 can hold.
Also interesting is 8...Bg4 instead of 8...Re8. After 9.f3 Bc5, threatening 10...Re8. White can try 10.Nc3 Re8 11.Ne4, now Black has 11...Nd4 and White is busted
