Was it just me, or was that "checkmates" video hilarious? (nice pun by the way).
if you could make a new piece, how would it move?

The bishops move sort of like "rouges" in the variant rennecance (sorry if I spelled that wrong it's "ren-a-sance") chess exept it's 3 spaces and the capture on the third space. Very good idea though. Sorry if WOW sues you (bad joke)...

Maybe a good piece would be a blocker piece. It could teleport anywhere on the board with an open square and could only be captured if more than one piece was attacking it. Of course, it can't capture pieces itself.
Offensively, it can block escape routes for a king or other pieces and act as a preemptive to capture a piece that is being protected.
Defensively, it can stop pawns from promoting, it can block checks, and it can save pieces.
The queen is op, but the knight can jump over pieces, which the queen can’t. Why not combine queen and knight movement?

I would not make a new piece, even if I could. The game is almost perfect as it is. Not many games are interesting at the highest level, the amateur level beginner level for as long as chess is.
That being said, I would definitely play as chess variant that had either a teleporting unit (let's say assassin) or a ranged attack (let's say archer).
a new move; kill your own pieces. so for example if a your pawn is blocking you you should be allowed to just kill it yourself. i think of it like an old school feudal system, the king just quits paying the peasants and they die/leave.
Second new move, Combine pieces. this is like if u make a knight escort your queen, the new army has potential for both attacks. so u could combine a bishop and rook to make a "queen". maybe the middle squares would have to be occupied for this to happen.
