So this is a game I played against my buddy who is 1500. I got a game rating of 1100 for this and it’s not like he was going easy on me. His game was 1650. I played well however I still find it hard to gain ELO in my own games. I know part of it is because I played too fast in most games And in this I played quite slow. But is there anything else I could be doing?

No one is "better than my elo." The ELO reflects your wins, losses, and draws. It says nothing at all about how well you play. If you win, your ELO goes up. If you lose, your ELO goes down. So win more!

I feel like you're forgetting form is part of current elo.

To be clear, I am terrible at chess too. I am a 500, but on a bad day, if I can't resist the tilt, I can go down to 400 while on a good day get to the 600s without trying at all. Interestingly, it seems if I ever have a good day when it is easy to get to the 600s the next day I am useless and crash back down. There is clearly psychology at play here.

Given you can lose 150 elo so quickly failing to resist tilt but getting it back takes a good bit longer I am really trying to get better at resisting playing into tilt.

I find it to be pretty consistent that when I force myself to use more time on moves, and just worry about each move making sense and achieving something small results start coming back my way again (i.e. stop trying to go for ideas that are above my station, as this so easily backfires). Put another way, increase patience.

Taking my time each move, which includes not instantly doing what looks so obviously right (like taking a hanging queen, say), is big part of it. Sure, 95% of the time taking that queen is the right thing to do. However, taking 15 seconds to establish that there isn't a pressing reason not to pays off. This is obviously just an extreme example to illustrate the point.

I am presently working on trying to counteract tunnel vision on my part as this effects multiple important aspects. I am aware of being significantly guilty of this. Sometimes I pick up on it at the time, but definitely not anything like as much as I should. In the games where I remember to really consciously focus on not doing this I notice a difference. It helps reduce hanging my pieces, noticing opponents' hanging pieces, spotting #1/#2 (still miss these too much, clearly), under-defended pieces, simple tactics for and against. For me at least, counter-acting my tunnel vision is productive.

The tricky bit for people stuck in our spot, from my experience at least, is actually applying what is understood to be what should be done. I get what I should be doing, but I don't know how to phrase but it is like I forget to do it too often. It isn't until I reflect on it afterwards that I realise I have been forgetting to do it (at the time not so much): for me, this all ties back into the effects of tunnel vision.

I looked at your last two losses.

in one, you hung your queen on move 16. Your opponent didn’t take it but still won.

in the other. You did not recapture a piece, then you took a free piece instead of taking a free rook, and then allowed your opponent to mate you.

so I would say your rating of 600 is about right. Dont pay attention to the rating given in the game review.

if you are asking for advice, I would suggest playing slower time controls so you have time to think about your opponent’s threats. In the second loss I mentioned, you still had 7 minutes left out of the 10 you started with Take time to think

I would also suggest paying more attention to general opening principles. I don’t mean trying to memorize move sequences learn the principles then pay attention to apppying them in your games

i feel like my ratings bout' 700

I wouldn't even believe that black is 1500 rated in the first game. White kept blundering material and black kept missing it.

Even me I beat a 1700 rated player in bullet. Because having high bullet rating isn't really skill like if you have a high rating in rapid.

hmm maybe it's a bullet thing yh. i did just lose to another 1500 but this time he was defo cheating.

Thank You all for your responses. I completely agree I am lacking in many ways and I'm not saying I DESERVE to be higher as I had to lose in order get here. It was more so asking for advice as, at least I feel, with consistency I would be decently higher. I have noted those of you who provided genuine advice so thank you again. @AlbaSETI , @mikewier
