Italian Mate in Ten

In this game I opened with the Italian.  Black made several tactical errors which led to an avoidable mate in 10.  This game should serve as a good illustration of certain things not to do in the opening as Black...

Stupid...wrong word...but yes, he made some pretty poor choices.  Fortunately, this game does a good job of illustrating exactly why they were poor choices...

You had 5. Nxe5! fxe5  6. Qh5+!, taking either the knight back or the rook in a couple of moves.

That's if black doesn't fall into another trap - 5. Nxe5 fxe5

Then if, as above, 6. Qh5+ g6 7. Qxe5+ Qe7 8. Qxh8 (which also forks two knights)

But even worse is: 6. Qh5+ Ke7 7. Bg5+! Kd6 8. Bxd8

So it's either a rook and knight or a queen

I agree with isaac. 5. Nxe5 is very strong. 5. a3 is a pansy move anyway.  Were you really concerned about a bishop check on b4? You just play c3 in response. Besides, you could have already castled at move 5, then there's no check to worry about.

You guys are absolutely right, 5. Nxe5 was better than a3.  However, I was playing fast and didn't see it.  Thank you for highlighting it.  Again though, I thought a3 was a good positional move to make regardless so I made it.  Black obviously wasn't putting any pressure on me, so I was just being safe I suppose.

Even though 5. Nxe5 IS a better move, I support your a3 B.  You had no idea that Black would play so poorly... so why not put an extra move on defense?  I, more than likely, would have done the same.

it's always a bad move to capture knight in that situation,,,, this game could be played diffrently and white most certain will loose

If instead off 5...Nxf3+ black plays 5...Ne7 then he could survive. However winning is an entirely different matter.
