@chamo,

Here are my five pieces of advice I would give to any player who wants to improve. They are arranged by priority.

(1) Study and play over tactics, promotions, and mating patterns. They are all fun to study and you’ll have fun as you build up a repertoire.

(2) Play over entire games that end in mate, or that lead to a forced mate. That way you can see the processes a good player might use to get into a mating pattern.

(3) Play over correspondence games as opposed to OTB and blitz games. Correspondence games are much, much richer in ideas and mating patterns.

(4)   Select one to three openings and make them your specialty. Do the same for Black defences.

(5)  Hardest part: study the endgame. Maybe I should not tell you this – but my specialty are King and pawn endings.

@chamo,

Almost forgot. You did ask me a question.

I am of the opinion that anyone who wants to write a blog should be able to write a blog. It can be a source of enjoyment and learning, and it will generally force you to write better and clarify one's ideas.

So go for it!

Thank you! As for correspondence, unfortunately I am stuck at home and can't play that. But thank you for the rest! I've got Silman's endgame course what do you think about it?

There is no such thing as "partially smothered mate".

Is this a smothered mate then? Cz the king only has one luft square, which is taken by the pawn

People should know what a term refers to before posting. This happens here often. People speaking with much authority and yet they seem to not know the basics.

Thank you. Very wise words.

I am that guy.

Lol, you think my shouting was louder than the Beirut Blast? grin.png

Well I could be wrong and this might not be the smothered mate, but what I am sure of is that it COULD BE considered a smothered mate. Anyway I respect what you say but not sure about this sentence: "But you have to admit that you are wrong." Are you talking about blogging or how to name this pattern?

Avatar of Riverlandjack

Chamo I respect your blogging maybe you can learn me something. I am talking about the name of this pattern all the time.

@Chamo,

I started correspondence play at the end of the 1980s. At that time, all moves were sent by postcards. That was hard. But now you can engage in correspondence via the Internet.

You can also download correspondence games with the Internet and play them over on your laptop or you can print them out and play over them on a physical board at home. Playing over games on a physical board is supposed to be a little better for learning the patterns, but it’s a rule I usually don’t follow (I’m lazy.)

You can also order chess magazines and yearbooks from Ebay and have them shipped to your place. Again, if you can get a yearbook of correspondence games versus Over The Board (OTB), I would get the correspondence games book.

Good luck!

Please give me a link or a reference or anything, why do you write wit this color btw?

@chamo2074

Here are some suggestions.

T.D. Harding has an excellent website at :

http://chessmail.com/

I have several printed magazines from the early 2000s, which are excellent. In any case, the website  provides a number of links for correspondence chess.

The world correspondence chess organization can be found at:

https://www.iccf.com/

Or you can go to www.EBay.com and search for “correspondence chess”. Good for searching and finding chess books and magazines.

Or you can start a thread here on chess.com with the question, “What do you think of correspondence chess?”

Finally, you can google with the search words, “correspondence chess” and see where that leads you.

Oh, I usually post in blue as it is easier for me to see, and to find (when I need to reference to something I wrote).

Man which pattern do you think OP recognized then? I know that this is the main example for smothered mate:

But here is the thing, what do you think OP checkmate pattern is? If OP qualifies it as a smothered mate, then he recognized that pattern
