^ Bg5!! is a brilliant move

8.Bg5 is pretty normal there. They shouldn't take it of course. 8.Nc3 c6 9.Nd5! is another way to catch people in tactics.

I don't think 8.. Qg6 helps much, white would surely just play Nc3 and 0-0-0 with a huge attack.
But I've just noticed black might have the annoying resource 8.. Bb4+!, e.g. 9. c3 Qxg5 10. Bxf7+ but then the king can hide on f8 and black is still alive.

A nice occurence of the rare Epaulette mating pattern. Well, he didn't get mated, but resigned in knowledge of the consequences of his next forced move.

Move 6 is a nice variation to know because there are some good attacking lines and black can find it difficult to navigate... although I'd never seen this particular opportunity before.

The opening is the funniest part: it's not often that you reach a Sicilian structure after eight moves and from a d4 opening.

It's true that's not an everyday occurrence, but similar transpositions are common in correspondence chess. One of my best victories in the French Defense began 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nc3 e6 3.e4 d5 4.Bg5 Be7 ... White was a National Master who was 2-0 against me before this game. Our score is now 2 1/2-1 1/2 in his favor.
This game was my first time playing any titled player, and it was a win due to a really nice deflection sacrifice. The rating difference was almost 500 points.
