It seems your opponent did everything possible for you to win.

Too be fair I don't understand the ideas in this opening.

White plays for an attack on the Kingside, while black on the Queenside.

Youre 2000+ USCF, and you dont understand the ideas behind that opening?  Not making fun of you, just surprised.

I was mostly a french player at the time trying something new.

On move 18) Nxh5, what do you mean by it being the only move?

I think what he means by that, is since white is playing for a King side attack, and he is down 3 pawns.  He needs to play 18.Nh5 to bust open the King side - it opens the g, and h files.
