Thank you Tactics Trainer

As a bit of a chess noob, I am quite pleased with this! As the name suggests, I owe it all to the Tactics Trainer and its incessant sacrifices, discovered checks and horrific forks.

For those of you who don't know how to find the Tactics Trainer, it's under "Learn" on the menu bar at the top of the site. I think a daily session of tactics can help anyone stay sharp and nearly everyone improve their results. Most games between amateurs feature large swings in the advantage based on tactical oversights. The tactical trainer is a good way to be on the right side of these swings more often!

What a plug! Did you write the problems for it?

Yes, it's one of the lesser known gems on our site. :) We wanted to make sure all the kinks were worked out before we started promoting it a bit more. Now our users are starting to do that for us.
Avatar of Loomis
Heh, no I did not write the problems for it. Though maybe jay can tell us where the problems come from?

Well, a few hundred of them are from the daily puzzles we have. The other 5-6k are from downloadable pgn's on the internet that we manually went through and screened. We are currently working on generating thousands more using chess.com games and crafty and such.

Cool, I actually recognized some of the problems because they also appear in the CT-Art problem set. I have actually seen problems that I know from that software in a handful of places around the 'net.

Manually checking 5-6k problems must have been a boat load of work. I know from beating to death the CT-Art problem set that these old school open access problems aren't necessarily checked and a good number have problems.

I have my fingers crossed that chess.com will exceed the other online options for tactical training (CTS, ChessTempo). I think you guys are well on the way.

Thanks. any ideas to help us improve it are always welcome. I feel we already have exceeded the ones mentioned, but I, of course, am biased. :)  I guess the one area they probably have us beat right now are the # of problems in the database, and the fact that their problems have been around much longer so have a much more accurate rating. It will take some time/use before all our problems get rated appropriately. However, just comparing user experience, interface, and features, I think Chess.com wins! :D

My God that sounds like a lot of work.  Thank you, though.  It's been a great help.

I've  just started using tactics trainer and its very helpful, especially as a beginning player. I like that you begin learning right from the moment you start the trainer.

Emphatically concur with the initial comments of Loomis (#2) and Jay (#4). Accordingly, I have made every effort to visit the Tactics Trainer daily. Thanks.

Tactics Trainer is good, without a question.

Great job winning the Queen!

I wonder, are there any forced mate opportunities after fxg3 or is the win of material best in this position?

I love tactics trainer!!!!  there was a puzzle once where white was down but with the correct moves could force a stalemate...  don't you know within a month I used the same tactics to draw a game that I was trailing and otherwise should have lost!  Very Nice play on the game... Isn't it satisfing to sacrifice material for positional or discovered forks.
