Hello, everyone! I've spent a lot of time playing chess against my phone, but I never really progressed past playing against level 3 of the AI, and it got really tedious because the AI would just play the same two lines of the Scandinavian as black and the Elephant Gambit as white.
So, at the advice of a lot of people, I started playing against humans, although only online thus far. I've jumped from being rated 836 according to the app on my phone to being rated 1290 according to the site I'm playing on, which I'm happy about!
According to the computer I played quite accurately in this game, and I made sure to play with a plan (although I won't claim that the plans I formulated were necessarily the best ones for a given position).
Here is the game (I am Carlington):
(Sorry about the scoring notes, those were inserted into the PGN file by the analysis tool I used.)
As you can no doubt tell, I don't have much experience playing against hypermodern openings, which is why I chose the non-committal Nf6 response as my first move (I must admit, though, I didn't realise that I could have played d5). The game then transposed to a double queen's pawn game, which looked like a mirrored Berlin Defence to me, so I tried to play a backwards Ruy Lopez, where I took on white's role. Maybe not the wisest of options, in retrospect, but it turned out well in the end!
The main reason I'm proud of this game is that this is the first game I've ever successfully used a mating net, which I now know is an insanely satisfying feeling and much more fun than trading off to an endgame and relying on the theory and endgame drills I've done.
After the move 17 blunder, white could never recover. It was only a matter of time before you stepped on his neck. And you did it quite quickly and effectively.
