I wanted to showcase a game I played as white today. At move 9. I am under serious attack, but things are not as they seam. I think that the key point to wining this game was not letting white castle. also notice that after we trade off some pieces that black is left with immobile bishop, knight, and rooks.

This is only example but it's probably reason why he play a5. I don't think that your 6 move was good better is e3

I'm no expert at 1 d4 openings (I play about 1 out of 100 games with white d4) but can you enlighten my ignorance why you played 5 a4? I really do not understand that move. Isn't the idea behind this opening you lure away blacks d pawn and then grab the center with e4? Blacks fifth move seems to take advantage of you not claiming the center. Is there any deep idea behind 5 a4.

Good game btw. Liked the way you came out of blacks attack!.

And thanks in advance for explaining!

I think the main point is to not let black guard his pawn with b5. This is from a book I have.

"5.a4 With this move, the Alapine Variation, White prevents the protection of the c4-pawn. Play now proceeds:

5...Bf5          6.e3 e6

7.Bxc4 Bb4    7.0-0 0-0"

I would not say that 6.Ne5 was bad, but i will agree that 6.e3 is better. Then again I dont think i am playing at a level where my oppenent can take advantage of that not so good move. It is the first time I have played it and I will be trying it again the next chance I get.

a4 is not necesary. I actually prefer black play b5, because I play Bg2!
