When your opening fails...

Endgame skills can save you.

This is a game I had here on live chess, and I think its an exemplary example of why giving up when going down 3 points in material is ridiculous.  Here it is:

Magryx

Okay... that wasn't really a display of very good endgame skills and anyway you weren't really down in material after u recaptured his bishop.

And resigning with a 3 point material disadvantage and not much of a positional advantage isn't ridiculous... Unless you're telling everyone not to resign when they're 3 points down without any compensation in a match against someone equal or greater. Imagine someone not resigning in a match against... I dunno, Kasparov?

White did have 21 BxRc5 leading to an easy win.  And you had a 24 Rc4 getting your peice back. Generally I am down on resigning as you can always get in interesting situations.

Edit at 2PM: My above is poorly written. Written too early.  I meant you had 23 ...Rc4 recovering your piece in a straight forward manner. The way you played it worked out well for you, but after your 23...Qg5, he had 24 BxRc3 RxQd1 25RaxRd1 and he is left with 2 rooks and a bishop against your queen and should win easily. 25...Qc5+ is met by 26 Bd4.

I also meant that I agree with you as I also often hesitate to resign as things sometimes change.

I preferred to defend the knight with my bishop for he had perhaps the strongest outpost in chess for a knight: one of two center squares on your opponent's side.
