I'm not sure what you mean you "quadruple checked". I'm thinking 1) visualize it in your mind 2) use the analysis board 3) ask your friend who is a master 4) put it into Rybka. Of course I'm kidding! (the last two would be cheating and I know Erik's not a cheater)

yeah. i just kept looking over and over for a way for the black king to escape or block the check. it just seemed implausible!
I've looked back on games and realized I missed checkmate. My policy I try to practice now is look for a check, and see if it's mate, or leads to mate. It's hard to get off a certain mental track though. Good job on the game.
It's a helpmate, basically..... black has to cooperate to bring it about.
Which is why helpmates are the best form of chess composition.....
From one of my crazy 3 min gambit openings, a similar idea (I can't remember how the king's position is named here, something to do with his own self-imposed prison... anyone?) And if white plays Kd1, what do you think happens?
