i made this forum when i noticed how different a 1500 blitz rated player is to a 1500 rapid player. why is the skill difference and strength so different>

evidence: the people at my blitz level

  • dont just premove the london system
  • dont just autopilot the italian game
  • dont just play hope chess and 1 movers
  • they play real openings
  • play try  to have fun

the people at my former rapid level (1850)

  • mostly play londons or italian
  • play 1 movers and hope chess
  • they go for tricks or play openings that are just bad for them
  • try to make the game as dry as possible and usually will try to trade everything

so i ask agian. why is it so different????

Hmm okay....odd. My second account is currently rated 1845 in rapid and I just checked, zero rated rapid games (out of 70) have London as the opening. According to my insights, 38 of my games ended in the middlegame v 33 that ended in the endgame, and pretty sure that games that ended in the endgame weren't always because of being "willing to trade everything" early on, so....can't imagine that "trading everything" could have been too common

that could just be with your account. on my old account even at the 1800 level most games were bowdlers, londons, or some other system

but im still shocked even at my 1450 blitz level im getting mainline sicilians and 2.c4 in the queens pawn

im just not used to it

Okay. Well I just checked. You have 112 rated rapids against people in the 1800-1900 range. Out of those, you had 1 game with the London, and 3 with the Italian.

By contrast, you had 9 games with the Ruy Lopez, 19 with the Sicilian, and 8 with the Caro-Kann.

out of the nine games how many were open/closed ruy lopez? how many were steinitz ruy lopez?

how many of the sicilian games were an anti sicilian?

Avatar of ice_cream_cake

A bit lazy to check lol....those don't show up in the openings list.

Avatar of AngryPuffer

you sure?

i can remember most my games and i know damn well most of them are an anti sicilian, steinitz/arkhangelsk ruy lopez. or some system opening in d4

Okay, since you insist, maybe I'll run the filter again sometime and check...maybe not now though, perhaps later today.

My blitz rating is over 300 lower than rapid, just can't think fast enough it seems, the time pressure increase my blundering exponentially, doesn't really matter what the opening is. Often I can't even convert a piece advantage to a win in 5 mins.

out of 156 games

  • 51 were bowdler
  • 8 were smith-morra
  • 23 were alapin
  • 50 were open
  • the rest was some other goofy sideline

Note that I filtered by 1800-1900 rating opponents

I think the rating scales are simply not calibrated to each other. A difference of, idk, 300 points between blitz and rapid seems fairly normal for beginner to intermediate players.
