Hey guys, if you’re tired of memorizing 20 moves of theory just to get a playable position, try *Chess960* aka Fischer Random. It’s chess, but your opening prep means nothing and your actual chess skill matters from move 1.
It is standard chess, but the back rank pieces are randomized with 2 rules:
*Bishops must be on opposite color squares* – one on light, one on dark
*King must be between the rooks* – so castling still works
That gives you 960 possible starting positions. Bobby Fischer picked it so you can’t just be a bookworm.
Example start: RNBQKBRR instead of RNBQKBNR
#Castling Works Differently
Since the king and rooks don’t start on standard squares, castling is done like this:
- Move your king to its castling square: g1 for kingside, c1 for queenside
- Move the rook to the square it would be on after a normal castle: f1 for kingside, d1 for queenside
Lichess and http://Chess.com handle this automatically. Don’t overthink it.
#Why play it?
- *No prep*: Your opponent can’t crush you with a line they studied for 100 hours
- *Improves real chess*: You get better at calculating and understanding piece coordination
- *More fun*: Every game feels fresh. No Berlin Endgame 20 moves deep
#Tips for Your First Games
*Develop fast* – Don’t waste time. Open diagonals for bishops immediately
*King safety first* – In some setups, castling long is bad. Check both sides
*Tactics over theory* – Patterns matter more than memorized lines
#Play 5+0 or 3+2 – Fast time controls make it chaotic and fun
#Where to Play
- *Lichess*: Click Variants > Chess960. Free, no ads, huge player base
- *Chess.com*: Under Variants. 1200-1800 rating pool is active
