I paid for membership with US Chess, now how do I get a rating?

I just became a paid member of US Chess. I read that membership is required to get a rating. From here, what do I have to do to get to the beginning 400 rating and then after that, build up my rating? Do I have to do it in person over the board or can I do it online? Where do I play? Is there a simple guide to read or FAQ I can look at? Thank you.

Hi,

Maybe worth visiting here and this should help

Thanks

Thank you, I will peruse the data.

A more succinct summary might be helpful if it's available anywhere. It might also help others who are starting out like me and need info on getting involved.

US Chess doesn't give a default rating. You'll get an initial rating after playing our first games. If you want a detailed description, you can read https://new.uschess.org/sites/default/files/media/documents/the-us-chess-rating-system-revised-september-2020.pdf

You can play Online on any site that has a US Chess affiliate running Online rated games, such as the one posted by @StumpyBlitzer, which is Chess.com's affiliate. Game played online only impact the US Chess Online rating pools.

You can also play over the board. You would need to find events close to you or that you're willing to travel to. You can look on the US Chess site and/or find your state affiliate to look for events or clubs.
