I think in the last episode they used algebraic notation once. When the kid ran out of the chess hall and announced Knight to g3. I'm glad I learned descriptive notation back in the day.
New Netflix Series "The Queens Gambit"

Hey those of you who has seen the whole series or most of it
Please don't give away the sequence of the series . . .
If you don't care for it that's your problem don't ruin it for us . . .
I'm enjoying it . . .

i watched the first two episodes and i found very interesting as far as chess. . .
There was one Oops . . . The old man said "kb3" then moved "Kf3" minor flaw .
i never used Netflix and didn't know i had it on my fire . . .
Can't wait to continue the series. So Monday I'll watch 3 & 4 . . .
He said King's Bishop 3, which is correct.
yes

By the way that professor in the first episode....who appeared just for a few moments...looked funny

I watched the first episode, so I am probably not the best person to ask, but I will try to give my thoughts...
1) It was really nice to see the actors and actresses move the chess pieces so naturally. It wasn't awkward when it came to moving across the board.
2) It was a bit too much when they were trying to show her addiction to the tranquilizers. In the episode, it showed her stuffing her face with the pills like they were Cheetos.
3) I like how the used chess terms like backwards pawns, opening names, and Scholars mate. It helps relate to the series better.
4) It got kinda boring in some parts so it wasn't really something that captured my attention for long.
Overall I would rate it a 6.7/10, so yeah... I hope you enjoyed reading my commentary on "The Queen's Gambit."

How can you rate something 6.7/10 after saying it was "kinda boring in some parts so it wasn't really something that captured my attention for long?"
That makes no sense. That makes 0/10 sense.

All shows have ups and downs, but it could still be your favorite TV show. What I meant by some parts were boring, is that there is like a conversation going on and I wasn't putting my full attention to it. OR this one scene was moving a little bit slower than I'd like.
As I said in my previous post I only watched the first episode, and the first episode is always a little bit slow because you are being introduced to the characters and stuff. But I would definitely continue watching it.

I thought "The Queens Gambit" was just totally cool.
Anya Taylor-Joy is amazing.
Marielle Heller (who also plays Alma Wheatley) does another stellar directing job.
Two thumbs up.

I would have preferred if they played the very last game throughout the series, so you got to see it building up move by move. Then have flashbacks at each move, then the move has a double meaning hinged on the person's history and the game position. I thought that the acting was mostly superficial except for the young girl, the janitor and some of her parts. Because of it being a series, thought they could have added a lot more depth. As a side-line would have been interesting if they had fleshed out the relationship with her and the French model. What I was most impressed with was the visuals and enjoyed the chess set on the ceiling..

Good ideas. You should be a movie producer.

I am watching and I love it.
I don't understand the notation they are doing. Can someone explain?
Basically, the files are not labeled A thru H as will modern notation. Instead they are named by your players piece. a = queens rook, b = queens knight, h= kings rook, etc
So for example, the move e4 is called pawn to king 4. g6 is pawn to kings knight 6. Nf3 is knight to kings bishop 3.
The squares have different names depending on which side is moving. The numbering from the perspective of each player. For example, if whites knight moves to d2, the move is called knight to queen 2. If black moves his knight to the same square however, it is called knight to queen 7.
I think I got that right. Some please correct me if not!

Well spotted! I checked that part and the kid actually said "knight to g6!" Turns out algebraic notation was used twice more in the final game.

I think g6 would be P-KN3, since each move is given from the side of that player. That’s what made the system confusing and error-prone.

Yes you are right in the case of black playing g6 in the opening it would be pawn to kings knight 3. Pawn to kings knight 6 would mean white pushed a pawn to g6 or black pushed a pawn to g3!
