This one is for the math and computer geeks. The total number of possible positions that arise after n moves, where n is a single moves played by either side with n = 1, 3, 5, 2n+1 is the white moves and n=2, 4, 6, 2n is blacks move n # of positions 1 20 2 400 3 890

There are only about 10^38 legal and sensible positions.
