I don't think you can qualify for CM using a USCF rating.

Well, 2200 is NM anyway.

Are you going to become USCF NM? or which is the title that you got now?

(Since your profile still says Candidate Master)

Looks like after his provisional period (20 games) he got a rating of 1200.  After 1 year he was already 1960.

I was initially assuming that he already played at something like 1900 strength but just didn’t start playing any rated games until 3 years ago. Your post makes it seem like he truly went from patzer to master in 3 years, which is incredibly inspiring. Congrats Matt!

Awe-inspiring for sure.

That's very good. Do you think that might be a record? 1113 was the very first established rating in Feb 2011. So 1113 points in 2 yrs, 10 mnths. Exactly double. I agree with you Matt, BOOM!

Avatar of waffllemaster

I've heard some top players say they were FIDE candidate masters after 2 years.  Matt is really fast and pretty close but not quite a world record Tongue Out

Don't rain on his parade! jk

Seriously waffle, you gotta admit that this is what everyone dreams about being able to do and just about noone actually can.

Check out the rating history for Advait Patel he is a young boy from WV where i am from, really a good kid as well. Went from 399 in Oct. 2010 to 1900"s in Oct 2012 and is now very close to Master now that is impressive I'm sorry, i kinda made it sound like this guys rating climb was not as impressive which it really is i was just trying to get my boy some credit

In the post above mine MrDamonSmith asked if it was a record.

Is that even possible? It must take a special sort of effort to get a zero rating, no?

Scottrf was kinda joking, he actually went from unrated to 1200 to 1900 within a year or so (and never approached zero).

[EDIT]: He hit 686 at the beginning, all time low I think.

Some kids have sub 500 ratings... which is just... unimaginable to me.  I've seen published ratings in the 100s...

I assume they hate chess and their parents made them play for a summer and they lost every game because they weren't interested enough to remember how the pieces moved.

Yeah, that's amazing too. However, his very first established rating was 1050 in the exact same month as Matt. So in 2 yrs & 10 mnths he gained 1137! Almost the same over the same period. Wow. How old is he?

I think the best way to judge rating increases for record purposes is to look at the very first established rating. Because if you get that rating in just 2-3 months then its pretty obvious thats your playing level from the start. A person can be 1500 level but never have played in tournaments & it takes a few tournaments to get the hang of things, get used to the invironment, writing your moves down, playing on a clock, etc. That 1500 could easily have a first provisional rating under 1000 or much lower. It takes a couple dozen games to level out to their true playing ability.

Umm... maybe if you're an ADHD 10 year old or something.

I never had a problem pressing my clock or writing my moves.  And before my first tournament all I did was play 3/0 online.  Ok maybe it's hard for some to remember at first.  But a 1500 isn't going to be rated much lower than 1500.  Certainly not 1000.

Anyway of course there can be no official rating increase like this.  It would be too easy to fake for someone with prior training and experience.
