The reason it played d4 and c4 more than e4 was because it felt the Berlin was just a draw by force, and it handled the Sicilian poorly from both colors.  Therefore it avoided both by not playing e4.

If AlphaZero wanted to avoid "The Berlin" he should opt for that instead. (Even tho 2.) Bc4 2...) Nf6is also called The Berlin as well)
