1800+ rapid without studying? My impressions

Hey everyone,

My first time posting on these forums. So lately I've been playing a lot of chess. And it seems kind of ridiculous to me that I'm nearing 1800. I've never studied chess besides knowing which way each piece moves. Hell, I still get confused with the en-passant rule at times. I did play chess growing up - with friends and family for laughs though and never professionally.

I personally never imagined I'd go past 1500. But lately, playing with a bunch of random 1750+ folks on here - it's starting to seem more and more apparent to me that there are plenty of highly rated users who blunder often and suffer from tunnelvision (me included) - way more than I imagined. I always thought every 1800 player plays the perfect move (at least the first 10-15 moves anyway), but I guess not. This makes me feel like I could go higher up the ranks without needing to study. I don't know. So my question is : how far can someone who's never learnt chess make it to on chess.com in rapid? No opening knowledge, no theories, etc. Is 2000 doable or been done? I'm curious to know.

You did it!! You are 1800 rapid now!

I've been in the 1800 rating range, but I think it's just me being lucky. Since then, I've only recovered from the 1500s to the 1600 rating. Note : 1800s rating was in my old account that I forgot what the gmail password was.

Thanks for reporting those weirdo spams @Fet. Haha yeah!! I'm psyched! The dude blundered so bad though - dang, it def. is a game of nerves for the most part ngl

i've seen many talented young players who just excel at tactics get really far, and to be honest rapid tends to be filled with tons and tons of tactical blunders. IMO around 2200 rapid players start getting very sound and then you will have to start being better strategically.

With that being said, you will definitely improve faster if you put some of your attention toward middlegame strategy, endgames, puzzles, etc.

I have studied chess everyday for hours for weeks, and my rapid rating is 1620…. 😭

you also have less than 1000 rapid games...

@Fet Trust me mate it's more psychological than anything. Eg. when I was nearing 1700, I'd get nervous and anxious and screw things up. I'd say a random 1500 can be as tactically sound as any 1800

Thanks @Chess_Player_lol - that's useful insight.

One day at the chess club I went there and blundered pawns like crazy and then today I demolished. My mood if i wanted to focus or not depends on me and that will affect your play. You should play on a day where you didn’t work yourself with if you’re in school after 2 assignments(especially people in high school) or after your job or else you will either be too tired or just not be in the mood. You can play, but it should be where you don’t care about rating so you don’t tilt 1000 points.

#11 I know. I'm not playing 24/7…. 974 games in 1.75 years is pretty good, that means that I played 1-2 games a day in average.

its good and your 1600 elo is good, but the reality is to reach these high elos you need to have an obscene amount of games under your belt.

at least in my experience you need to be doing A LOT of studying or A LOT of games, but ideally both if you want to become really good.

you can improve by just doing a little each day, but your progress will be much slower than other players. which is totally fine, its just a matter of figuring out what your goals are

Natural talent for board vision let's you get better fast.

To the OP,just curious,my interpretation of your post is that you reached 1800 ELO/rapid having only learned the rules and no other learning/ or practice involved?

Avatar of 200291d

@badger_song no other learning, yes. I'm not sure what you mean by practice other than playing random opponents online. If you mean practicing against bots or doing puzzles, etc. - no, I def. don't do that. Not to insult anyone here but I find those boring. I'd much rather straight up play real people
