1st tournament barrier of entry

So I am interested in going to my first on the board tournament and I was just looking through all the registration requirements. It is a 4man teams tournament and at first things all looked pretty good; the info was easy to fill out and I thought the entry fee of $15 seemed perfectly reasonable.

I then saw that I was required to be a member of both USCF($26 for my age) and my state chess association($10), and this seemed to be a little steep to me. $51 to play in one tournament, which would probably be the only one I'd be able to attend this year as there aren't many in my area just seems like more than it's worth for two days of chess.

So I just came here to ask if this was a normal enough price for getting registered and entering a tournament, and also what everyone's opinion is on this potentially preventing newer players from actively getting involved and playing in tournaments and such.

No opinions/input from anyone :(

This is pretty inexpensive. Most weekend events charge at least $100 to play. National membership is required and state federation dues are normal. I have a life membership to USCF, I paid $200 for it 40 years ago. I know some folks still living who bought theirs for $100.

Go skiing for a weekend, see how much that costs you. Chess is still a bargain.

Mmk, thanks for the info! Are the lifetime memberships still available in any form or is it only yearly now (that's all I found on the USCF site)?

I'm thinking I may just put off going to on the board events then... Online and school club is free, so save a bit where I can. School is expensive enough on its own :)

Life membership now is $1500. Nothing beats real live competition. Go ahead and play, get a rating, see how you stand...

That's true for sure, on the board is much more enjoyable than online, but cost really is an issue for now (just moved into a new apartment and school in the fall-woohoo rice for every meal!). Hopefully sometime soon :)

That's the thing though... Here in South Dakota it is pretty much for 2-3 tournaments a year max- and that's if I make it to every single tournament in the state for that year.

Thank you to both of you for the info and the encouragement :)

One more quick question, is it usually possible to register for things like the USCF and your state association at a tournament?
