2000+ blitz players : chess.com vs lichess !? Do you feel the difference !?

I don't play on that site much at all because I'm on chess.com so much, but I'd say 200 point difference is accurate for most. I also believe that their is more of a difference at certain rating levels though. Probably less of a difference the higher the rating. Maybe 2700+ players play about the same (can't confirm), but lower rated players feel a bigger gap. I know someone on chess.com about 900-1000 rapid rating, but their rating over there is like 1300-1400; like what?

The little I played on there was a good portion of blitz even though I don't play much blitz at all. I reached 2000 blitz rating on there fairly quickly, but on chess.com I'm only about 1800-ish blitz.

p.s. currently lower than 1800 blitz on here because of a chess.com tournament I played where I dropped a lot and I just haven't gotten the time to play more to get it back yet. Blitz isn't really a big deal to me now, so most of my chess playing time is chess.com rapid anyway.

It's very different.

Noob perspective:

I beat two 2000 rated players on lichess in rapid (30+0)... I can't believe I can put up a fight vs a 1600-1700 in 30+0 on chess.com...

Also I have like 10-20 victories over 2200s in bullet (lichess)... ok maybe some berzerk...

but vs only 1 victory against a 2200 chess.com (only on time, 0.01 seconds, drawn position) chess.com...

I have achieved both 2300+ blitz ratings, on chess.com and lichess and I feel like achieving it on lichess feels more like I achieved 1000 rating or something  ( "walk in the park") feels very easy , without much trying or stress, whether if I try to do the same on chess.com feels more like an endless torture back and forth.

My point is even tho ratings are the same (pool of players are different of course) it feels so so so much harder on chess.com, maybe because of some lag on chess.com as well I don't know.

That's just my opinion, I'm interested to hear other strong blitzers to hear their opinions.

Or maybe Chess.com has better engine that your opponents use! wink.png

I think they have different rating systems

I do think the other chess sites rating is a bit more inflated.

Yeah lichess is about 150-200 ratings points higher at around the 2000 level. However as you go up to the very high levels like 2500+ curiously they start to become very similar again, almost equal. There was a dude who had a website about it. Click compare ratings for blitz chess.com and lichess.com:

At 2200-2300, the only difference that I feel is style. The Lichess folk tend to play more defensively, somehow. Other than that, the players' strength seems very similar. I was 2200 on both sites after I reached 2200 on chess.com for the first time. Now, I'm 2300 on Lichess, but haven't played on chess.com for a while - I feel like I'll be able to hit 2300 here when I start playing.

Fallacy: op never asked your damn opinion on how much chess blitz chess is. He asked if you felt a difference between lichess blitz players and chess.com blitz players.

Absolutely I can tell a difference.

Lichess ratings are ridiculously inflated.

Lol, even at the 2400-2500 level? No way. What's your Lichess rating?

From my experience there is a difference of about 150 points in blitz. I.e. between 2000 and 2200. on lichess =  1850-2050 on chess.com

Although I do play much more on lichess then on chess.com.

What is easy? Eventually you find a level that is hard to beat on both platforms. And ratings vary over time too. There is inflation going on on both platforms (Either that or I am getting better happy.png  I remember not so long ago chess.com increased all bullet ratings a 150 points. Before I struggled to get past 1800 and now I struggle to get past 1950. Play hasn't changed. Just the numbers.

Lichess is by and large much less laggy than chess.com, at least in my experience. So I prefer playing there. does anybody still play in ICC?

I thought about it, but changed my mind. ICC is mostly used for online tournaments which I don’t really like.

there is a huge difference

tbh my lichess feels way higher in ratings than on chess.com tho i feel like i could reach 2300 one day and perhaps finally try to equalize with my lichess peak maybe 💕

Now is a rare case that I have a higher rating on chess.com than lichess 😀 not just a bit higher, a quite a bit higher, +50 points (~2370 vs ~2320). But still I feel here is harder, in lichess I lose many winning positions because of time (don’t know why I can’t move pieces fast at lichess). I don’t feel a 2300 player at lichess is a challenge but here is a big challenge.

At that level, the ratings should be more or less equal (give and take a few). The larger difference in lichess and chess.com ratings is at below 2000. At the very highest level, the lichess ratings even seem to be smaller than the corresponding chess.com ratings.

This is correct. again this has to do with new or dormant accounts that were not active for as long so not as accurately rated.   Which again affects the lower rated players much more adversely.

The fact that lower ratings are different has to do with that they are normalized differently. By default, you start with a 1500 rating on lichess, as recommended by the Glicko 2 system , whereas on chess.com you start with a 1200 (though you can also choose that, I believe).

This is correct also,  and it might be part of the reason the matches feel so much more competitive and consistent at my level on lichess compared to chess.com.     And most players literally default at 400 or purposely choose that rating on chess.com even when they are 2200 rated players.   Constantly making new accounts.   I call it out on the forums all  the time and I'm hated for it lol.

As a 2200+ level player, I can confidently tell you that it is absolutely zero fun playing 400-rated players. All we have to do to win, even giving queen odds, is capture hanging pieces. No fun at all. If we wanted to mess around with beginners, we'd be much more likely to play folk around the 1000 level. Rest assured there are very few, if not zero, 2200+ strength 400s.

Neither use Elo. Chesscom uses Glicko and lichess.org uses Glicko-2

My Lichess rating is higher too, but you are all wrong. The standard is the same.

The lag on chess.com is ridiculous. I am fighting the whole time simply to secure the time allocated to me. IE 3mins does not mean 3 mins on chess.com.

If it feels lighter on lichess, it's because it is, not because other players are worse.

Avatar of maxkho2

By the way, to keep this thread alive, my Lichess rating is 2330, while here it is 2305. Not that much of a difference, really.
