Finally hit 2000 rapid! 7 months ago I picked up chess again at around 1100 rating and set out a goal to hit 2000 rapid within a year or two. Hit it today with a 6 game winning streak and a nice win over a 2100! The next goal is to play otb and progress towards uscf expert/NM. I know this will be a challenge, anyone got any tips?

1100-2000 in 7 months?! How?! What did you do?
Avatar of rray20
Thank you! I played many games and reviewed many of them. I tilted a few times along the way but afterwards tried to ensure that I stop after 3-4 losses in a row to prevent further tilting. Also did puzzles a few times a week, and when reviewing games I did the “retry” feature to help see the best moves for the game. Through playing, I also learned a decent response for 4-7 moves to many common openings. In addition I watched YouTubers like gothamchess and naroditsky, particularly the videos of them covering games they played against players rated slightly higher than me, so I could see their thought process and think the same way. Also studied some good positional play and learned how to stay solid while creating and preying on weaknesses, and improved endgame technique, as well as holding a worse position. That was kinda long, but all these things together helped me. My plan is to keep going with these things until I stagnate. Anyone let me know any other tips if you got any!

I was close to 1400 two weeks ago and now I am stuck at 1200. Can't figure out why.

Okay if you got 2000 rapid in 7 months either you are gifted as hell or you're cheating or you or not telling us something. You were literally strong as I am and I've been playing chess for over 15 years

@PRgrandmaster27, when I got to 1600 I tilted back down to 1500 and when I got to 1860 I tilted down to as low as 1720. Sometimes this happens, in order to prevent it try to ensure you play when fresh and make a rule such as if you lose 3 in a row you're done playing for the day. Really study the games you lose as well.

@OptimizingForwardForLife, I mean i didn't get 2000 in 7 months from scratch, i was initially 1100. I'm 23 right now, so still young, and I learned to play as a kid and peaked around 1000 uscf at like 11 or 12 or something. Maybe that has something to do with my rate of progress. Cheating for me makes literally no sense, since my goal is not just improving on chess.com, but also to hit uscf NM some day. Hence why I asked for tips on how to target this.

And I was happy with going from 800 to 1200 in one year...

I jest. Well done!

Well done, do u have a lot of time to play chess or u just play in ur free time?

Avatar of rray20

@Fr3nchToastCrunch, thats great improvement, don't sell yourself short!

@jerrytheops, I work a 9-5 but outside of that my main hobbies are working out and chess so I devote probably 10-12 hours a week to chess.
