TheWorld Chess Championship 2014will be a match between the current world champion,Magnus Carlsen, and challengerViswanathan Anand, to determine the 2014World Chess Champion. It will be heldfrom 5 November to 25 November 2014, under the auspices of the World Chess Federation (FIDE).[2]

Anand is only the second former champion (after Karpov in 1987 and 1990) to win a Candidates tournament. At 44, Anand is the second oldest person to win a Candidates tournament, behindViktor Korchnoiin1977and1981

Viktor Lvovich Korchnoi[2](Russian:Ви́ктор Льво́вич Корчно́й,IPA:[kɐrt͡ɕˈnoj]; born23 March 1931) is a professionalchessplayer, author and until recently the oldest activegrandmasteron the tournament circuit. He is widely considered the strongest player to have never becomeWorld Chess Champion.Born inLeningrad,Soviet Union, Korchnoi defected to the Netherlands in 1976, and has been residing in Switzerland for many years. Korchnoi played three matchesagainstAnatoly Karpov. In 1974, he lost theCandidatesfinal to Karpov, who was declared world champion in 1975 whenBobby Fischerrefused to defend his title. He then won two consecutive Candidates cycles to qualify forWorld Championship matcheswith Karpov in 1978 and 1981, losing both.Korchnoi was a candidate for the World Championship on tenoccasions (1962, 1968, 1971, 1974, 1977, 1980, 1983, 1985, 1988 and 1991). He was also a four-timeUSSR chess champion, a five-time member of Soviet teams that won the European championship, and a six-time member of Soviet teams that won theChess Olympiad. In September 2006, he won theWorld Senior Chess Championship.
