Aha that’s always the way. That rating 200 points above us where we occasionally get paired and get a glimpse of what’s to come. Playing them is often a humbling experience.

But there are 1000 rated players who think 1200s are too good. There are 1900 rated players who think 2100s are too good. The cycle continues!

Croton is only 400ish points above me and I’ve beat him over twenty times which is more than he’s beat me.

The problem is, let's say in blitz, when you think about it 2100 thinks 2300 are too good. 2300 thinks similarly about 2500. Then are 2500s extra too good for 2100s? And here's the scary part, the cycle continue: 2500 with 2700. 2700 with 2900. 2900 with 3100. 3100 with 3300. It scares the **** out of me when I think how good 3300s are supposed to be. Like if I think 2300s are too good, then what kind of immortals are 3300s lmao

It’s a ridiculous learning curve, but the actual margins get slimmer and slimmer (but harder and harder to achieve) each step!

I often think of it like this: a 100 elo player plays both me and Magnus Carlsen, but has no idea which one of us is who. We’ll both win, with ease. To the 100 elo player, there’s no difference; they’ll hang pieces and get checkmated early. But if I play Magnus, the difference becomes all too obvious.

And it continues: a strong club player plays Magnus and Stockfish. Sure, they might be able to guess who is who, but not with a super high degree of confidence. The club player’s loss is assured in either case. But when Magnus plays Stockfish…. The difference is clear.

2300 is considered a good rating.

Don't be scared - get motivated to surpass them. tongue.png

It's all about accumulating tiny bits of knowledge along the way. The more you learn from your mistakes, the more your skill-set grows. Little by little, like bricks building a wall ... your wall will continue to grow, as long as you keep learning. And you'll keep climbing the rating ladder.

(Easier said than done, I know ... but still.)
