I read on here somewhere that I can use a 3D board but I can't find it in settings board and pieces, is it somewhere else?

That's where it is. The 3D piece sets are at the bottom of the piece set lists.

Is it my imagination or are the 3D pieces still represented on a 2D board... 😶

It looks a little odd.

That just changes the piece set. There is a Real 3D option but it may be premium only.
