5 minute versus 10 minute games

You may feel you're doing much better in the adrenaline rush of quick games where you don't have to think ahead so much but you may be undermining your long-term progress.

Blitz has its uses but real improvement is painful.
Just my opinion.

Okay, but why then am I winning against higher scoring players who I was losing to in 10 minute games ?

Perhaps because you are better than them in this form of rapid low quality chess. But when both of you have more time to think, you struggle. You don't need to worry about this is you only want to play 5-minute chess. But if you want to play better at the longer forms of chess (and tbh I don't really think 10 minutes is a long chess happy.png) then, as urk has pointed out, you need to play more longer games, you need to think harder and longer, and you need to study.

Haha, you know what guys ? It looks like at least urk and Tobias are high scoring players who study...My attitude has been a bit on the side of trying to come up with winning strategies on my own. Is that as senseless as trying to figure out physics from scratch ? Are all high scorers people who have extensively studied strategy ?

You're quick but what was the point of this thread?

To brag about your quickness or seek advice?

When you move from 500 blitz to 900 blitz I'll offer you my hearty congratulations and then go have a good laugh because my little sister could still beat your dumb ass.

Trust me I know I'm bad lol

I'm sorry to have upset you. I was genuinely asking for advice.

And I appreciate responses and sharing of your experiences from when you began playing....

You guys are right, though. I just played ten minute games and lost. The pool of players must be better. Is the best way to study through this site (the videos) or would you recommend particular books to read ?

Hola. My advice is threefold. Either get a good beginners book like croakleys chess strategy for kids. Or start harder by getting a tactics and endgame book. But, there is quite a bit of free material here on chess.com and on the net generally, so you could check out the material and then decide. The tale of the unread chessbooks on the shelf is legendary...getting good at chess is hard, slow and needs dedication. Having said that, the learning curve at the beginning is quite steep imho. Good luck with it all and don't forget to enjoy the game.

I only play 3 minute. The best way to learn chess is to play using the quickest time controls. I suggest playing as much bullet as possible if you want to improve your game. Any time control over 3 minutes is just for leisurely fun, and shouldn't be used for serious chess training.

Damn, Vlad is truly coldblooded and ruthless.

I thought it was just a myth.
