"Bobby Fischer teaches Chess" is as good a book as any to start with, as far as reading material. google it. :}>
I started reading predator at the chessboard and it seems good. The book is at chesstactics.org, I think.

Btw, if anyone wants to play, and critique every move I make, explaining why, I'd be more than happy to. x)

Zeyrion, what can really help you quickly is watching Masters play blitz on Youtube like ChessExplained's videos. If you watched those every day for a week, I would bet you'd gain a minimum of 100pts. Sometimes its easier to watch the moves then to read or have someone explain them to you.

Fair enough, I'll check it out. Thanks. Blitz is my favourite too. :)
Hey guys, I've been hovering around 1,000 for about a month or two, today I managed to make it to 1,140. Although I still feel like I know next to nothing about chess apart from the basic openings and a few tactics (I don't count the cheap checkmate openings). I'd appreciate any beginners material you could offer to help me improve my game. I do the daily 'Tactics Trainer' puzzles but I just don't feel like I'm understanding more of what I'm doing overall. Any reading material? Thank you. :)
I was in your situation and felt I didn't understand the game at all, so my dad gave me a chess book to read. Fred Reinfeld's The Complete Chess course helped me improve rapidly. I'd highly recommend reading the chapter on "How to play the white pieces". After understanding that chapter I increased my rating by about 200 points thereafter.

Wow, I'll definitely look it up. Thank you.
Reinfeld's book is in descriptive notation, not algebraic...still a great book IMO. That book actually got me interested in chess again:-)

Once again - What good is the knowledge he's obtained in the book if he's still hanging pieces?
Why not work on tactics until he's not and then start spending time on the bigger picture? He's not even going to understand what they're talking about if he's like 900 on tactics trainer.

Play slower chess.
Play 30 min games in live, or at least 10 min. Get a few "Online Chess" correspondence style games going, and take your time thinking about the moves and how your opponent could refute them.
I would be happy to play an unrated "Online Chess" game with you. If you want, start one at 7 days per move.

Silman is a very popular author right now in chess instruction. His large print and simple english make him very readable.

I recommend replaying the games in a good anthology on a real chessboard.
This will develop your feel for good chess and you'll also see plenty of beautiful ideas that will serve you for a long time...
I would strongly recommend Reti's Masters of the Chessboard as a fantastic way to start your chess journey

bobby fischer teaches chess is a pretty basic tactics book, focusing on back rank mates. i'm not sure what you think is in that book, but you've clearly got the wrong idea.

Bobby Fischer teaches chess and Predator at the Chessboard http://www.chesstactics.org/ are both good suggestions. The latter has a lot more variety.
