Remembering openings is a skill in itself

My name is Frank and I am a chess addict...wait...where are we?

Actually I am a borderline chess addict, handling it well these days.

So... what's up?

I have to say the OP is very brave indeed, starting a thread with no specific topic. These things have a tendency to get outta control. Haha

Well, we can try our best to manage the comments lol

And maybe memorizing openings is a skill, but if you played a game where you won due to theory, would you take that over winning originally?

And there's not a lot of people actively commenting si it's manageable

It just feels better to win without previous knowledge

Anyway I glossed over the chess part...ithe thread is at least confined to one small subject... chess...😏

Also, my Budapest Gambit guide is in the works, so be sure to check it out next to my Alekhine Defense guide as well in the future!

Yes sort of a joke compliment but serious as well.

Hmm i dont know chess has always been a 'recognize patterns' type of game so I am not sure. In any case a win is a win

I think your opponent should have been able to calculate the trap, within reason of course, depending what the trap is, meaning they have something worse

Fair point

True story: I played many thousands of games online with the, um, theory, that memorizing openings was in a sense cheating. Now I know this is a very immature view.

I was playing the Pirc (first 5 moves) vs QG strictly because of "best by test". Everyone was playing QG a few years ago and that naturally developed for me.

Now I wish I spent more time studying openings, although opening principles are more important, IMO.

I'm planning on making a Vienna Game, Scotch Game, Budapest and Alekhine guide in total, and if anyone wants me to write on anything in particular, feel free to let me know!

Vienna and kings gambits have always seem intriguing

I just studied one opening for white(Vienna Game, though I have been playing the Scotch Game recently), one response to 1.e4(Alekhine Defense), and one response to 1.d4( Budapest Gambit)
