A GM's rating without being a GM?

This is a post of the theoretical variety.

I wonder... How skilled of a player do you have to be to be rated 2500?

Let me explain by giving a background on my thought process. I thought, I am rated 1200. If I keep playing players that are about 900 or 1000 over and over and beating them could I achieve a 2500 level rating?

But of course this doesn't seem practical, without doing any calculations at all I figure it would take millions of games if it's at all possible.

Therefore, I am wondering if we took a 2000 level player and kept matching them against say 1500 rated players over and over. Would their goal of reaching 2500 in this nature be a possibility?

I should also mention that I don't mean an internet rating, where the games are easily accessible. I mean is it practically possible through tournament play?

In tournaments, one is not likely to be a 2000 level player and matched against 1500 rated players over and over.

"... Players with equal scores are paired whenever possible. ... Within a score group, i.e. all players who have the same score, the upper half by ranking (28A) is paired against the lower half. ..." - USCF swiss system tournament rules

if you did calculations then you would gave gotten the correct number. which is about 800 games.

(even less if you play a lot of games during the first month)

He is not a GM, but he has... "special skills".

Lol yes special skills that require a lot of $$$ and contacts

You will eventually be unable to score off of 900 or so players as it automatically sets the rating points you earn per time lower depending on the rank of your opponent. You have to consistently beat players 2000-2300 to become a 2500 player.

@Mophysrevenges isn't it 800 points?

I'm quite sure about that, because I still gain elo on a more than 400 points lower rated player...

So I'm not convinced with your math argument...

To get an official "Grandmaster" title, one has to score a certain percentage (including actual wins) against a very high rating field in a certain minimum number of tournaments. FIDE, who gives out the titles, can be referred to for more details.

400 or 800 depends on age and how much period has passed since you first played a rated player

I'm not sure about that. IF the mathematics of the elo rating is correct, then this is not possible, because in the rare occasions you lose, you will lose a lot of points.

However, in chess.com this is possible, because they only work with integer numbers. (as far as I know)

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_Afromeev

"Many top players in the chess world, including GM Alexander Baburin, feel that Afromeev's rise to the world's elite in middle age is a little too spectacular. They consider his rating achievement as a "fraud" and termed Afromeev's rise to the top an "abuse" of FIDE's rating system. In an article for Chess Today, (issue CT-2457) Baburin complains that it is completely unheard of and almost ludicrous to think that someone could suddenly reach the elite chessplayers in the world in middle age. He points to the fact that Afromeev himself organised many of the tournaments he appears in. On the other hand it is not unusual for players to organise tournaments they appear in. Afromeev has successfully sued IM Igor Yagupov, who comes from the same birthplace, for defamation in 64 No.7 of 2001 and easily won the case by presenting the scorecards, game reports, hotel receipts etc. According to Baburin, Afromeev's (recently unrated) driver now has an Elo rating of over 2440 and (again according to Baburin), he once stated that if he wanted, his cat would have a similar rating. Such things have not helped Afromeev's credibility as a world class chess player."

I just posted this as we have do many cats on this site and they might be interested ...

He was more likely to run off with his money given his previous convictions ...

@Mophysrevenges

I think you are right about the US sytem.

However I'm talking about the international FIDE chess rating not the US system.

In the FIDE system rating change is roughly claculated by  (score – PD) x K = the Rating Change

with score 0/0.5/1 and PD the probability of winning given a rating difference ranging from 0-800 points

K depends on games played and elo level

The last year I played USCF over the board my performance rating for the whole year was 2439. [this was a total of 15 games]

My [inactive now] correspondence rating is over 2500.

My record against USCF and correspondence masters is about 64%

I have only played 3 players who are grandmasters--but won all 3 games.

Due to some very bad luck--i am not even rated "master"Undecided

After a certain point you stop gaining points against lower rated players, after that no matter how many games you play, your rating will not go up.
