A plateau in my rating
I agree with Estragon on all accounts. I am just returning to chess from a 3 month break and am getting slaughtered. I am normally around 1600-1700 but because I have missed so much time, I am a bit weak.
The reason I quit for a while was because I was frustrated with my results. I was plateuing my rating after 2 years of play and was not going up. I know that I need to change my routine up a bit. The best advice is to keep going and try new things to get your mind off of the old ones.
I have found that improving my rating should not be a goal whatsoever. Because there will never be an end to that ambition, and it can seriously spoil your fun in playing. If you just keep on playing, and studying analyses, you will gradually improve but it should not take too much of your time or good humour. Only one tip: get a good engine (like Hiarcs) and analyse your own games, finding the great improvements you could have made.

Hi all,
I am currently a 1300+ rated player on Chess.com. After a small beginner's spurt (reaching 1430 on this website within a year of picking up chess), I found out that I've reached an embarrassing plateau in my rating. My play has not been improving much and my rating has remained roughly the same so far. Any ideas on how I can improve?
P.S. The place that I live in renders my taking part in OTB tournaments or hiring a coach impractical.
