A Public Apology

Due to circumstances at the moment, I will not have access to chess.com for a while.  So I had to resign ALL of my games.  I know that is maybe more dissapointing to my opponents than me (unless all you care about it points - then it isn't really a game or about fun anymore).

So I apologize to everyone who this affected.  Any roles that I held at the moment I will be relinquishing to respectable members of the clubs I am in.  I hope that there are no hard feelings here!

God bless,

Doug Pinson

Thank you very much...I will probably find this forum and let people know when I get back.  I made arrangements for all of the groups I was in so that they had capable leaders as well :-).  Maybe within a month I will be able to come back to the site - I really appreciate this site and the people I have met!

Bye BB... hope to see you pushing 1.f4 again soon... It's not going to feel like the Bird tournament without you.

Good luck BirdBrain and at the very least thanks for setting up the Bird's Opening group.

It's a shame to lose you, and I look forward to your swift return. I have to respect your decision to resign your positions - Oh so many players would put their games on vacation just in case, rather than accept a 500pt rating dive like that!

I learned heaps in the games we played, and found you to be friendly, interesting, and sporting, and in possesion of a contagious appetite for chess to boot. Who will hammer me with flank openings now?

Best wishes,

David.

When you come back you will recoup your points quite swiftly by playing higher rated players in matches I'm sure.

Yes you are right - I still feel that any Bird's Opening player should keep the King's Gambit in his back pocket - just because someone else told you it was a losing opening, ask them to prove it! :-)

I have fun when I occasionally play the King's Gambit.  I remember one night I came to the chess club and a rival club came.  My opponent said something smark-aleck like, "This won't take long."  I looked at him like, "What's that supposed to mean?"  He said, "We're playing a quick game" or something to that extent - lying right to my face.

I proceeded to play the King's Gambit against him, and in 10 moves, I had Ng5, Bc4 and Qh5 all breathing down on his king - needless to say, after he lost, he blamed it on a toothache, headache, or something else, I don't remember! :-)

Don't underestimate the King's Gambit, no matter who told you it was a bad choice for White to play.

So he was right then - it didn't take long!! =)

Nothing wrong with King's gambit, even the clearly unsound Morra Gambit still makes you shit when someone actually plays it on you under timed conditions!

I do feel much of whites surprise and initiave can be lost in these lines when playing correspondence (that's not to say I haven't lost to it a few times!) When I used to play it on live, it won for me more often than not. And it basically guarantees excitement at the board!

I think it is important to worry less about the mainline moves (unless you thoroughly understand them) and play what you understand.  Afterwards you may take some time to see a mainline, but if you are like me, sometimes you may overlook something that a book offers, and so you play something that your favorite GM played, only to find your opponent knows the line better than you, and you lose!  I have always faired better with trying what feels right instead of what I am told is correct.

1. f4 e5 2. e4, 1. e4 e5 2. f4 still has sting.  Even with 2...d5 or 2...exf4, even with the early ...g5 lines, Black still has to hang strong.  It is not to everyone's taste to defend these kind of positions.  I believe if I were on the Black side of the King's Gambit, I would probably play exf4 followed by ...d5 to counter the center quickly.  Or even the Cunningham with ...exf4 and ...Be7.
