A Puzzle Rush Experiment!

Since June 22nd, National Master Elijah Logozar has been collecting data from an experiment he directed involving one of chess.com's hypest features, puzzle rush. If you enjoy puzzle rush or puzzle battle and are interested in improving your tactical vision and pattern recognition, especially applicable to speed chess, consider volunteering for Elijah's experiment alongside 10-15 titled players.

The experiment requires participants to record all their attempts on this spreadsheet:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JbCm1huJPzxbIm3H0ptRndro0BD3DwgXU2b4KMzJfkI/edit#gid=1524529367. "Quitting" the rush after initially performing poorly or "claiming a win" in the case of a puzzle battle is not permitted for the sake of collecting the most accurate data. It is asked that all volunteers participate in this experiment for a minimum of 45 days, ideally an hour per day. For clarification, sections should not be mixed. 5-minute rush and 3-minute rush require different sections. In addition, record if you use music or not and be reasonably consistent about this.

Suggestions:

  • Listen to music while training. Why? Mozart effect --> increased emotional engagement and enjoyment --> increased memory retention as memory is connected to emotion in the hippocampus.
  • But won't it distract me? Only if you aren't used to it. Once you are used to music, it becomes a high-pass filter (harder to leave "the zone" once you enter).
  • Optimal board settings: animation type (none). https://www.chess.com/settings/board. You can copy/paste the data: https://www.chess.com/stats/puzzles/username?type=puzzle-rush

For full information, rules, and suggestions, be sure to check the "Rules and Suggestions" section of the aforementioned spreadsheet. To join, Private Message @LogoCzar, telling him you are interested and provide in the message, your real name, age, and email address. I would if I was old enough with that much time.

I look back on such a focused chess immersion fondly, as well as the community discussion.
