If you're trying to get better, and playing in OTB tournaments with long time controls, then you're definitely staying mentally active... but I don't think chess is any better than the hundreds of other ways you could do it.
A Question to all chess players
As for general intelligence, no, that's mostly something non-players associate with chess. People who play chess professionally (and most amateurs too) know that being smart and being good at chess are separate things. There are average intelligence grandmasters and geniuses who seem to be stuck near beginner level ![]()
Being good at chess takes systematic work over a long period of time and passion for the game.
That's an interesting approach!
I personally think that it has something with intelligence and definitely develops the mind.
Are there any other opinions?
I agree with @Ghost_Horse0 that chess isn't something that some people are good at and others not so good. You just have to have time and dedication. (something I don't have)
I think playing and studing chess makes you better at chess and that is about it. I think that anything you do that taxes the brain, or requires you to learn new things, helps to keep the brain as sharp as possible. I think chess really helps with pattern recognition but do not think it has anything to do with your math skills. I think that people who are good at math are detail oriented. This attention to detail also helps with chess, but just because you are good at math, does not mean you will be good at chess.

That may be true in general, but I think there must be something special about a person who can play 48 opponents at the same time while blindfolded and riding an exercise bike, and finish with 35 wins, 7 draws, and 6 losses.
I am curious myself and wanted to hear from other fellow chess players whether you feel and think that playing chess helps develop the mind?
Many people say the chess players are good in math and in general are intelligent people. What do you think?
This question has been asked too many times here. A developed mind in today's world of easy information access would search for answers before asking a question but apparently none of the OPs do. So no, statistically at least.
So is this holding you back from playing your first game here after 6 months?
