Hello all, I am a new here. I want to ask a question to all. How many hours should be practiced daily to be a 2000+ rated ?? Because a player who isn't professional chess player but fond of playing chess can't give so much time in chess. So I want to know this.

It depends on how motivated and creative you are and how much potential you actually have to get better at chess. I personally did 10+ hours a day a couple of months ago and it obviously made me one of the top players not just in our school but in the whole city in barely 2 months. It was too much of grind for me that I'd switched to 3 hours a day for the sole purpose of just maintaining my strength and the knowledge I'd gained. I'm like everyone here that has a life outside of chess. I belong to a top section in our school so I get 11 assignments, one from every subject, everyday that it gave me no choice but to sleep just 4-7 hours a day also because I only get 5 hours to get it done. Too many things that had to be done that I had almost no time to practice chess. What I mean in all of these is if you want to be 2000+ rated, you might want to have a good coach since I'm self-studying and you may wan't to avoid what I've been through, you also have to be committed at all times, very passionate in chess, and give your brain and body a break so you can maintain your mental intelligence, be focused, and can actually think straight. Be warned that to be a professional chess player, as strong as an IM, that you have to spend most of your life in chess and don't think it's that simple.

This is a badly asked question for many reasons.

I guess most of all is that no one is awarded points for the hours of practice and study they do. You get rating points by improving your performance.

Some people are 2000 after a few years. Some after 10+ years. Some are never 2000.

(As for hours a day, 1 or 2 is fine as long as it's quality and systematic over the course of many years)

Just an aside, most 2000 rated players have been playing a long time, and know a fairly ludicrous amount about the game. NOTHING compared to GMs. Those guys are like walking libraries... but still, I feel like no one should know as much as 2000. It's really a ridiculously huge amount of knowledge to have about a game.

My 2 cents.
