Hi everyone I know this question is something a non competitve player would ask but I am competitve and I'm still not entirely sure. When I read about GM and IM I sometimes see in there interviews somethin like this. "Well GM Ray Keen served as my second during the tournament and I don't think I would have came 1st if he hadn't put so much time into being my Second. What in the world is a second considered to be in chess ?Undecided

A second is an assistant of a player during a tournament. He performs analytical work -  prepares openings, compiles dossiers on opponents, etc.
