Aborting a game before your first move should not be a violation!

People who abandon games because they are losing and they want to make you wait instead of resigning is infuriating and rightly against policy.

But before move 1, it should be my right to decide whether I want to play it not after I see who the opponent is.

An example of when I will abort a game is when I'm on a losing streak.  The computer decides to give me 5 opponents in a row all higher rated than me.  I'm losing and feeling like crap and just want to win one and then bam, opponent number 6 is 150 points higher then me.  Ugh.  I don't need any more games like my last 5. So I abort.

What's wrong with that?  It is not an inconvenience to my opponent, unless you consider the struggle of clicking a mouse button an inconvenience.  I don't care if people do it to me.  It should not be against the rules.

If you're going to be biased against who you play, then you shouldn't be playing at all. Also, there's a setting which switches the rating of the player you get, and if there really is a specific player who you don't want to play because they were insulting you or something, you can block them.

Ok for one if there was no penalty for it then you could just abort every time you don’t get white. Also playing people 150 points higher is just part of the game. If it wasn’t against the rules so many games would be aborted due to not getting white and facing slightly higher ratings. It absolutely should not be allowed

so you can play with white pieces all the time.. very clever indeed grin.png

Hmm I'm surprised to see defense of this rule.

First, What's wrong with being biased about who you play?  The computer is definitely biased and does not choose opponents randomly.  It gives you bunches of lower rated players and then a bunch of higher rate players.  As a result you will see most people's rating graph has big up and down fluctuations.  I guess that's how this chess website likes to do it but it's not how I would like to do it.  Strictly random within your chosen range would be preferable to me.

If people don't want to play higher rated players they can do that simply by setting their preference to +0, -400, for example.

But for people who only want to play white, perhaps there just needs to some limit, like a warning if you are aborting 3 in a row or more than 10% of games or something like that?

I can't imagine why someone would want to play white all the time, but I'm certainly not losing sleep over the efforts of people like that.

The computer is not biased at all

Computer is sad that you accused it of something

Computer is crying and will get revenge by pairing you up with *stronger players lol

jk

But it isn't really biased at all. It'll choose a random player within your range.

So do you think people shouldn’t be punished at all for aborting? If so then please explain your reasoning. If there was no punishment people would only play white. Also white has an innate advantage over black. Just look it up, more games are one with white than black. Moving first might not seem like a big deal but it can make quite the difference. Also if it was allowed everyone would just abort until they found an opponent with a lower rating. I can’t see any benefit to allowing this.

One of my selected opponents, with a higher ranking than me, aborted before making the first move and I was awarded a win. I don't honestly think I should have been however.

In one of my recent matches both time clocks started flashing when it was my opponent's move. My opponent was awarded the match but I'm not sure why - quite possibly something I missed but I wonder if this has happened to any other players.

SpacePodz
I’ve never auto aborted. One time my opponent did but it was in an unrated match and it didn’t count be as winning or losing so maybe just a bug?

It sounds like you lost your internet connection in which case you end up losing because you don't see it respond to your opponents move

  1. Normally aborting before the game doesn't have any affect on rating, unless a player has already been warned about aborting, then it will start counting as a Loss.

What's wrong with that? How about... if... you're not willing to play a game where you might lose then don't play?

Punishing people who abort makes sense, otherwise you'll have a million people like you who abort for stupid reasons (I don't like playing people from that country, I don't like playing against 1.e4, I don't like playing black, etc)

i cant tell you the number of times i have clicked start new game out of salt for losing and then immediately realized that i should just take a break

gazzgaspayy

Dont play chess seriously. Play it casual. Me personally enjoy losing.

Another completely reasonable reason to abort and it shouldn't be penalized

SpacePodz
Not a good reason at all for it to not be penalized 😆

Isn’t that just the rule already...
