aborting

I can understand the reason for a game abort to some degree, but I do seem to get a lot of them from time to time. Why is it folks abort a game. Is it something I am doing? Just a wonder...

Hello,

 I also wondered about the abort logic, and came up with three reasons;

 1. They don't want to lose the challenge, and accept it. They quickly go back and study the opponents stats and decide their odds of defeating them. If they don't think they can win, they abort!

2. My second thought is all about how many points they may win or lose by playing this game. They seem to be more concerned about the points then a chess match.

3. Final reason, if your level of play is way far below their ability the game isn't worth it for either of you??Kiss On the other hand there are some players that will play you knowing they will win and gain a couple of points. One should respect the the point system, and try to play within their range, or higher.Wink

I abort games all the time. If I have to sit and wait for more than 5-10 seconds for my opponent to make a first move, I abort and find someone else. Inevitably, I almost always get invited back into the game when the person moves.

Copy that, That is what I expected to be one of the good reasons for it. Lack of move, I myself have aborted twice as they did not appear to be there. I also suspected some to not want a game with me, as they may feel I am under their challenge. For some, yep I lost, for others I may have surprised them and pulled off a W ha ha. Anyway, thanks for the answers.

On that note, I have only been "challenged" once in live chess. Do you have to be a member for awhile before the computer asks you to play? All the rest of the time, I have put out the challenge.

Also, I'm sure some members only like to play certain openings. I have a friend who favors the queen's gambit, and a lot of people quit when they see that d pawn move forward.

 How briskly do you start your game?  I encounter many opponents who abort if I've not made a move within three to five seconds of the game's start.

I abort games if my opponent doesn't make his first move in a reasonable amount of time - if he has White, he should have decided on an opening move by the time he starts a game; if he has Black, I usually play 1. e4 as White, so he should have decided on a reply for this not too off-beat move as well :)

I also abort my game if I just have mis-clicked and really wanted to accept another challenge.

Reasons I've read from other players include:

if you have disabled chat by default - some people seem to take this personal

if you have the wrong rating - too low or too high - however I don't understand this since you can set the rating range for your desired opponents, I usually limit this from -100 to +100 from my own rating, so I won't ever have to abort a game because of this

if they get Black and only want to play as White

if you play an opening they don't like (or if they want to practice a specific opening and you play something else)
